Traveling with a wheelchair presents all types of challenges. You have less control and it is much harder to plan. For us space and timing are huge components while traveling. You have to know your surroundings and anticipate what you might need. For us the main issue while traveling is using the bathroom. Mike doesn’t use a traditional bathroom, so we have to take precautions.
One major tip that we have found works very well while flying is to bring shrink wrap and a sign to place on your wheelchair. For Mike, he does not use a power chair, so we are talking about his manual chair. In the past, before we have used the shrink wrap, invariably something always would go wrong with Mike’s chair. We have found that by shrink wrapping the chair, it has helped tremendously. Whenever you are traveling you really are at the mercy of the airlines, so this is one tip that helps stack the odds in your favor.
